Ontario Approves massive 40MW Solar Farm in Sarnia

by William Papolis, Thursday Apr 26, 2007 7:04PM EST

The Ontario government has approved plans to build North America's largest PV solar farm in Sarnia Ontario. This new 40 Megawatt (MW) plant will cost an estimated $260 million, will use about 200 acres of land and provide enough energy for 6,000 homes.

Through the Standard Offer Contract currently offered by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), this new utility project, funded by Skypower, will be paid $.42 per KWh generated for the next 20 years. OPA currently pays higher rates than this during peak periods so from OPA's point of view, it actually makes sense to purchase solar power instead. Plus, as an added benefit, no CO2 emissions will be generated by this power source.
